Why Viminacium is special
Viminacium was one of the largest Roman cities in the Balkans — a legionary capital of some 40,000 people, with an amphitheatre, baths and a mint of its own. Its frescoed mausoleum is a rare survival, and the site's other headline find, the mammoth Vika, makes for one of the more unusual pairings in European archaeology: a Roman capital and an Ice Age giant on the same ground.
The practicalities of the day
Kostolac sits 90 minutes to two hours east of Belgrade, and there's no easy way to reach Viminacium by public transport. A guided day trip is how nearly everyone gets there, typically paired with the Danube fortresses at Golubac and Smederevo.
Go for the whole Danube circuit
The tour we link to doesn't stop at Viminacium alone — it combines the Roman city with the Danube fortresses at Smederevo and Golubac, making for a fuller day than a single-site visit.
Come prepared, and see the mammoth
Wear sturdy shoes for open, uneven ground and bring sun protection. Don't leave without seeing Vika the mammoth — her shelter sits a short walk from the main Roman ruins and is easy to miss if you don't ask.
